The Preliminary SAT, also known as the PSAT/NMSQT® (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), is a preparatory version of the SAT exam. Its is essentially the same length and content as the SAT.
Functionally, the tests are different in that SAT is used for college admissions, which the PSAT is not. And the PSAT can be used to put a student in the running for a National Merit scholarship, whereas the SAT does not.
